- WWP Reaches Out of Court Settlement on Salmon-Challis NF Otter Creek Diversion -
Western Watersheds Project and the Committee for Idaho's High Desert have agreed to a stipulated settlement in WWP's
Otter Creek water diversion lawsuit. The litigation was brought seeking to end an unscreened and unmeasured irrigation diversion
which de-waters Otter Creek, an occupied bull trout stream, in the Salmon-Challis National Forest near Challis, Idaho. The agreement
stipulates that the water right holders, Verl and Tuddie Jones, will not divert any water from Otter Creek unless and until a screening
and measurement device is in place which will ensure up and downstream fish passage year-round in Otter Creek. This settlement
follows on the heels of an almost identical legal settlement on the Mahogany Creek diversion located on BLM lands in the Pahsimeroi
Valley. WWP will continue to press for the ending of low value stream de-watering diversions in critical habitat for ESA listed fish species. Western Watersheds Project

Chugach National Forest ranger Deidre St. Louis, who started working on the Kenai
Peninsula in 1989 and eventually moved up to the position of Glacier District Ranger in
Girdwood, is headed out of the state, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The federal
agency said St. Louis has taken a job as the recreation and lands staff officer for the
Coconino National Forest in Flagstaff, Ariz. She is one of two seasoned Chugach forest
rangers heading out of state. Cal Baker, the Cordova district ranger for the past nine
years, is also packing. He's headed for a position as the ecosystem team leader for the
Kisatchie National Forest in Pineville, La., according to the Forest Service. Both
expressed regrets at leaving Alaska. Forest Supervisor Dave Gibbons said both will be
hard to replace, but he has begun a search for applicants to fill the two jobs. Anchorage Daily News
