SUPPORT WILDERNESS PROTECTION

May 28, 2004

Forty years ago, Congress passed the Wilderness Act “to secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness.” Since then, our population has grown 60 percent. But only 4 percent of our nation’s land is protected as wilderness from logging and other development.

Protect the nation’s wilderness heritage today. Ask your members of Congress to co-sponsor the Wild Sky Wilderness Act, HR 822, and the Virginia Ridge and Valley Wilderness and National Scenic Areas Act, S 2342 and HR 4202.

Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or email your members of Congress. Tell them you support the protection of “an enduring resource of wilderness.”

To learn more about the lands proposed for protection by the Wild Sky Wilderness Act, visit the Washington Wilderness Coalition’s Wild Sky Wilderness webpage. For more about the lands to be protected by the Virginia Ridge bill, visit the Southern Environmental Law Center’s Virginia Wilderness webpage.
